The Identity Series 2019-2020
This work invites you into my world to meet a series of its strange inhabitants clearly on the way to the same party…more or less human, each one in some way connected to the struggle to resist both an imposed single identity (‘disabled’) or the disorientating sense of fractured self my situation of 24/7 care engendered. The larger than life figures carry a power for anyone feeling reduced or ignored, they are a demand for attention denied.

Decorated like an Aztec icon with silver necklace and breasts. Red lines like sunrays emanate from her head but her face is obscured by black confusion - her mind is in turmoil. This part of the series is more like Keith Haring's outlined, simplified figures than the earlier, despairing, floating figures. The pose, arms uplifted, could be aggressive, dancing, surrendering (sometimes I am reminded of the chalk outline police draw around dead bodies..). The colours are vivid and bright. It is one of the biggest of the figures in this series, over 8ft high.
